Honoring Heroes: A Fall Concert

November 3, 2023

On Monday, November 6, 2023, the Hardin-Simmons University Concert Band will present its annual Fall Concert in Behrens Auditorium at 7:30 p.m. The theme of the Concert Band’s performance is “Heroes – Recognized or Silent.”

The music featured is:

For Country and Courage by Travis Weller honors first responders, firemen, & police

Gabriel’s Oboe – Ennio Morricone, arr. Robert Longfield, is a sax solo featuring Andrew Whitworth. It honors those who give their lives spreading the Gospel of a risen Savior.

The Witching Hour by Randall Standridge is a fun piece honoring those English teachers who got us through Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

With Quiet Courage by Larry Daehn honors those who have bravely faced a terminal disease and those who cared for them

Armed Forces Service Medley, which was arranged by HSU ex, Gene Curry, honors all those who have served the United States in the five military services, many who did not return, and the families of them all. They will be asked to stand when their service song is performed.

And My Spirit Lives On by William Owens honors the life of a former Tahoka band student and all those children and youth who never made it to adulthood and those whose lives were affected by them.

The Thunderer by “the March King” himself, John Philip Sousa. Every concert must have a march. This is to honor all those ranchers and farmers who settled West Texas. Every morning in the 50’s & 60’s Harry Holt’s Farm Report came on the radio in Abilene with John Philip Sousa’s The Thunderer.

The concert is free and represents members of the Abilene Community Band.
